Added sliding support for front vise

Watching Groggy & others build nice, shiny, new benches, made me feel a bit guilty that I never got around to adding the sliding support to mine. Every time I had to use a block of wood or some other object to prop up a long board in the front vise, I thought about it, but somehow never got around to it. So after more than 20 years, I reckoned the time had arrived.....

I stumbled over my my two remaining scraps of Maple, a couple of days ago, which was what got the grey cells working. Nothing like having the bare minimum of materials to work with! Anyway, this is what I came up with. The pics should be self-explaqnatory.

The shower door wheels are rated for 10Kg each. I would have liked a bit more capacity than that, but if they fail, they aren't too expensive or difficult to replace. It slides well, and stays put when the weight comes on, so seems like a successful venture.

While I was at the lathe making pegs for the support, I decided to make some new dogs for the front vise system. The old ones had gotten a bit tatty & loose. I made several pairs, each with a collar, so they can't fall through. So now my bench is (finally!) finished...

Hi Nick - sorry - been awaay for a few days with no internet access.

Do you mean the various scratches & dings? Just a collection of scars picked up from many years of use. I'm fairly caareful, but the odd mishap happens....

now I've had a closer look it seems I was actually looking at the board you had to show the sliding support in action

I reckon that after 20 years a bench should have a few dingles in it - looks used and loved that way.

I've seen somewhere someone use small ball catches in round dogs to support them in their holes

You mean like this?

They work really well in square dogs, & are simple to fit. Haven't tried them in round dogs. They would have to be the right size & fitted carefully so the ball contacts the side of the hole, but no reason why they should not work jsut as well....
