    Default Work Bench.

I have the opportunity to purchase some 6"x 2" hardwood (gum) that was milled some 14 years ago and has been racked ever since. I think it will be perfect for a future work bench I need to build. Thing is the boards are about 6 meters long and I will have to cut them to rough length to be able to transport them. So the question arises - what is the optimal dimensions for a work bench? Space is not a problem for me but I'm thinking a bench around 2 to 2.5 m x 700mm may be the most practical. What has been your experiences with bench size and what advice can you give me?

No space problem. What a luxury. I think there will be a few envious glances from the broom cupboards.

I would suggest 2.4m or 2.5m would be good. Much bigger and you have to get transport to take you on a full lap. If you ever need bigger, adjustable trestles will help you out.

All that surplus space can now be filled with other goodies.

Thanks for the response Bushmiller your comment re moving about the bench is what I was looking for. Just as easy to build a thumping big bench but there must be a practical workable limit. I'm thinking 2.4m. In my previous "broom cupboard" I had a 2.4m x 600mm bench that hung from the wall and folded up when the car was moved out. I could only access it from the front and the length for that set up was fine but I wondered about a freestanding bench of that size.

As for my current space - everything is relative and a matter of priorities. My new shed that I am in the process of setting up is 13m x 7.5m with 9m x 7.5m allocated to my workshop area, the rest is an office and bathroom/laundry. The workshop area is not huge by any means but relative to my previous workshop experiences - ENORMOUS!!
