What type of "hard wood"? As it is salvage, does it require and can you re-cut and re-surface it?
A STABLE hardwood is necessary for the top (preferably laminated narrow boards than joined wide boards). You can use just about anything for the base as long as it is solid (= thick and heavy).
Personally, I view a workbench as a "Rite of Passage" for a woodworker. Everyone should build their own. Having said that, I would not turn away an antique cabinetmakers bench if it were available. Also, workbenches are quite personal and it may be necessary to live with whatever you can get hold of until you finalise a design in keeping with your needs. Then build your own.

I would agree with all that Derek says. There are a number of designs that you can find on the web, they will give you some ideas.

Well you could cut off your legs. I am 6-1 and have the same problem
I built leg extentions for each end of my wood working bench. I bolted them on and they became part of the bench. May ways to do it. Happy wood working from a Yank.

I am the same height as you Woody, 1900 (5'15" in the old dimensions - which makes you a bit of a Shorty in this company SailingA! ) so I build all my benches, router table etc at 940 high.
I like all horizontal surfaces to be the same so they can be used as outfeeds, sawstools or whatever, so one of my next jobs is to put a filler between the stand on my table saw and it's body to bring it up to the same height as well.
Funny how a year old thread suddenly kicks back into life!
Cheers,
P

Chook Shed
Not much happening here. SWSBO wants some chooks, so I have the job of building a chook house, she had in mind a tent shape with a couple of wheels so it can be moved around. Does anybody have any ideas ? Can I use treated pine or will the eggs taste like arsenic or just last for 20 years if the chooks nibble the timber.
Thanks

Try this recent thread for info:
Chook shed
Use treated pine! The chooks eat lots of other stuff, and mostly their eggs don't come out tasting like it!

what sort of boat are you building on this higher than usual bench? A "tall ship" perhaps??
