    Default Bench top overhand

    Hi Everyone,

I'm in the progress of making my first workbench and have gone for a split top design based on my clamping capacity at this point in time. Due to the split top I'll need to support the top with stretchers between the front and back legs; this plus my vice configuration means that the top will overhand the legs by about 350mm.

I'm hoping to get some input about if the amount of overhang is acceptable or too much.

The workbench size will be about 1900x700x850 with a top thickness of ~85mm. Pine is the primary wood used, with a little Vic Ash for end caps and along the face of the tops.

I've attached a top down view of the bench to provide measurements and layout.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
Make the overhang as much as the vice needs. Your drawing looks ok. My overhang is a tad more than that and the top is only 75mm. Showing no sign of sag after 8 years. Not sure if there is any real rule for this other than common sense and not having something that tips up.
    Regards
    John

    Thanks for the reply

I didn't consider sag as a potential issue but glad you brought it up, specifically that it hasn't been an issue.

I couldn't find any rules etc and looking at other benches mainly showed that the overhand was as long as required by tail vises if included, but there was a lot of variance in the bench length to overhang ratio.

I will have to admit it was not something I gave enough thought too at the planning stage. The tail vice was an afterthought as I had an old vice laying about. I had aimed to have the same overhang both ends but had to slide things along a bit for the tail vice to fit.
