cant thank you enough! I have been searching the web for exactly that for the last couple of days. Will give this a go using hardwood rails like you suggested ! Will post some pics once I have finished.

I purchased the hand wheel on eBay . This was the cheapest option. I looked at Australian supplies but the cost for the two handwheels I needed for the tail vice and leg vies would have been close to $180.
currently I am up to a third try on connecting the tail vice to the workbench and am having considerable issues. Once I have an option that works I will post some pictures.
