    Yeah I considered using Blackwood for the top as well but decided that a lighter top is more pleasant to work on for me too - not sure why.

    Haha, yeah that's a comment I've gotten a bit already. Some people seem to assume that because it's pretty/well made that it won't be used the way a bench should be. But it will. For me, making it as nice as I could to begin with was a joy in and of itself - I don't mind that it will get beat up over time - that won't reduce the satisfaction of making it in the first place.

    Hey Dom

    So in the end did you attach the top or is resting with its own weight and mortice and tenons?

    I'm assuming it would be fine to have it setup this way and easier if you ever decide to break it down to move.

    Hi Nathan,

    Sorry mate, just saw your post. Yeah I ended up using the benchcrafted lag screws to snug the tops down to the base, it really just ensured that the tops were nice and tight down on the top rails and ensured alignment of the tops.
