Hi all,
I allowed myself to be tempted into a "junk store" and found this tucked away in a cupboard. I am hoping that it is a "bench screw" that I can use as the basis for making a tail vice. I have been doing internet research on various options for how to build one, but I am still very unsure just what it is and how I use it. I figure the "flange" on top of the end-piece will need to be morticed into a block of some sort and a the whole thing fitted into a cradle or case, (also of some sort). I am also seeing a stationary face that is the front of the "cradle" and a mobile face which is going to need guide rails attached to it which slide in and out when the screw is operated. Then how is the whole thing attached to the bench! Links or sketches would be appreciated.
Renovation of the workbench has been put on hold until I have worked out what this thing is and how to incorporate it into my plans.

That looks very much like the screw out of a Dawn metal working vice

From DJ's suggestion I had a look at one of my Dawn metalwork vices, it's very similar to that mechanism. I can't say identical because I'm not going to pull it apart
