Ideas wanted for a 'skate'
One of the ideas for my new bench is to be able to move it around. I don't want to fit a permanent set of wheels and am thinking along the lines of a 'skate' that I can slip under one end and then lift and push from the other end.
Has anyone done something similar? Something like what the V8 supercar crews use to manoeuvre their cars around with maybe?
Any thoughts appreciated.
Thanks

What you probably need is a caster in each corner that with the press of a lever becomes a solid pad.
Another idea is a lever at each end that as you push down lifts the bench up on to wheels. When the lever is raised the wheels lift up and the bench legs hit the floor.

Depending on how high you wanted to lift it to get the wheels under. Will the wheels be just for the bench, or will it need to fit/adapt other pieces?
One of the ways I've seen, it to make a shape similar to a top hat, that castors are screwed to. If swiveling castors are used, this will allow the bench to be pushed up to a wall for example. If 2 sets were made one could be fitted at each end, and moving made a lot easier.

Attach a pair of fixed 4” non-swivelling wheels to the the legs at one end of the bench, these need to be touching the ground but not bearing any weight. At the other end of the bench you have a long lever that has a single caster acting as the fulcrum, jam this under the rail joining the legs and lever down. That end of the bench lifts up several inches, causing the other end to pivot on the two wheels which are now bearing the weight. The bench is now sitting on three wheels, one of which can swivel to allow you to change direction. Make sense? If not I can pencil it out and attach it to this post tomorrow sometime.

I did just what you have in mind. 2 sticks with 2 wheels on both, A stick to leaver up the bench then just slide wheeled stick under the frame. It was the most cost efficient and least work option for moving my bench. It was meant to be a quick fix and I intend getting those lift up castors at some stage but as I dont move it very often so thats slipped back on the to do list.

Sorry Tonyz, I went to the big green shed to investigate wheel prices and came away with this. At $15.75 it was cheaper than what I could buy wheels for and is pretty much spot on for size.
There will be another opportunity for the sticks!

...and if you need one set of two wheels at one end, two at the other, then you just need a saw..... They absolutely are the cheapest way to buy "commodity" wheels although for more specific needs there are better options than BGS's options

good find, just snagged one myself! for those playing along at home, they're about 85mm tall, so i reckon if you've got a leg rail with ~80mm clearance under it you'll be able to just get the legs off the floor without having to lift the bench too high to start with

Paul, that is a great idea although it would not have worked with my design which had the rails flush with the outside of the legs

With those trolleys, the wheels are soft. So do not leave them loaded or your wheels will not remain round.
