    Default Wait for it..........

First off, I wanted to show what I've been occupying myself with over the past week. Considering what's been going on of late, I figured that any progress is better than nothing.
So, my main objective has been building a chisel rack (mark1) which will be mounted in the window frame as I think I previously mentioned.

Here we go again.....double pics. I know not why.
Anyhow, I started off with the backing board made of WR cedar, but decided to make the individual spacers out of an old, but very tight grained oregon. To these I waxed and buffed, but I wasn't at all happy with the final finish, so I sanded it all back to bare wood.

Finally I took it back to 1200 w&d then just hit it with bees wax which is where I left it. The bases were made from the same cypress as the walls and really polished up well. The final pic shows it as it stands now except for the brass screws which now fill those nasty dark spots.

I guess I'm totally buggered when it comes to loading these pics in the order and spacing that I want so anyhow, here they are arze about.

    to be continued............

Default and now we have .......... the makings of a Bench!

Ok,this time I'm not even gonna try and space the pics to go in progress with the words. I guess I just don't get it.

So........this is where I am now up to with the bench frame. As you can tell, it's nothing like the proper woodworkers bench like Michael's, but hopefully it'll work out somewhere near what I am aiming for in the long run.
This is the right hand section as you would see it if standing in front on the main part. Which isn't built yet. Hell, I'm even confusing myself!

Anyhow, I'll just post some pics and hope someone can see what I'm about.

    Cheers,
    Bob

nice rack ... never thought of an open front rack like that. Might be time to change my MDF chisel rack of 20 years that has outlasted a set of chisels and now on round 2.

I must say some of the chisels simply disappeared to who knows where so it was a case of new complete set

It is a nice rack, and I've just had a thought on how it could be made flexible for sizes (fir someone who might be building a chisel collection). If you ran two pieces of T-Track across the face of the backboard then the spacers could be adjusted for width at any old time. Hmmmm...

Thank you both for your comments gentlemen. Like they say, there's nothing like a really good looking rack to set a guy's blood pumping.
I know I can always count on my two favourite "wingmen" to back me up with my progress. Maybe we should all have our own silly nicknames as in Top Gun.
I like the idea of the adjustable blocks for the chisels FF, and from every site I've trolled looking for inspiration, I've never come across that idea.
It's great how one person's achievement no matter how big or small, simple or complicated, it always gets your minds working to make a better mouse trap.
I must say that on the day I made those spacers, it was getting late and I started rushing things just so I could have a completed piece to show for my day's efforts.
The chamfers were made by holding each piece to the belt sander while in its vertical position and taking small "slices" at a time to try and get the matching complimentary angle for each chisel, while also considering the slightly different bevel for the accompanying chisel on the other side of the piece being sanded.
Geez! I'm making it sound like I was building the first chisel rack ever invented! I think I better quit while I'm behind.

    Cheers,
    Bob

Bob, I've got *rather a lot* of T-track in various formats (single, double, 2 over 1, 3 over 2) in stock, so if you wanted to fool around with that idea I'd be happy to post you a couple of lengths with the suitable bolts (of which I have many scores - probably way in excess of 4 score and 10).

FF, thanks for the offer, I'll certainly keep it in mind. I always reckon you can never have too much T track.

I've been busy cutting so many half-lap joints, I'm seeing them in my sleep.
Getting close to finishing off the left hand side of the bench. It's very similar to the right in design, but with an obvious larger overall surface area.
You should be able to see the router table top in one of the pics leaning up against the wall.
There's just one more bench 'beam' to go now, which is the actual long front piece. Though I'm not sure if it will be a continuous board yet as I still have some crazy thinking to do yet before I make my final decision.
In the mean time, I'll leave you with some progress shots from this arvo.

    Dave,
I've never needed a reason to have a BBQ before, so just let me know if and whenever you'd like to drop in and I'll make sure I have plenty of matches.
Plus I have an older Durden lathe already set up which still works pretty well. This isn't a very good shot considering the sunlight coming through the window, but you should be able to get a fair idea of it. Maybe you can show me a few tips and tricks about using it as I've just bumbled through blindly since I first got it from my father-in-law.

One thing I will have to do is spend a week cleaning the shed up after the bomb hit it. While this extension/bench re-build has been going on, I've just been using whatever flat surface that's available at the time. This is why the floor is the worse it's ever been. There's hardly even room for me to swing a broom so all I can manage to to do is pick up the off-cuts of timber which goes towards the wood heater for my mate to use when he sleeps in the shed.
Even his late fiance preferred to stay in the shed on a blow up bed rather than sleep inside the house. She would stay anywhere to be with him.
Now that it's just him, he'll be happy shacking out in the shed so he can get up early to go shooting while I'm sleeping in.
I usually him when he's back cause of the jug boiling for our early morning cuppas.

    Cheers,
    Bob

Yep, clear the shed and you'll clear your mind. You'll be able to see the job at hand and wrap your head around it.

Put a barbie on and tell us all about it on here 2-4 weeks beforehand and you'll be surprised how many turn up. They are a hoot! People have come from Melbourne, Jerilderie, Toowoomba, Tamworth and Hunter Valley to Katoomba regularly.

    Got space for tents?

That looks like a nice little set up in the pic. We can work on that.

Would be awesome if you had a full on get together.

Room for tents!!!????.............I've got enough room for a dozen caravan parks!

Does 70 acres sound big enough for y'all?

I've even got a spare house if you don't want wombats crapping at your doorway.
Sounds like a plan for the warmer months.

Bob, thanks very much for this great thread and pics.
Goulburn was our shopping town when on the farm. We are in Sydney now, being old, but have many happy memories of wonderful years.
All the very best to you, mate, Bill.
