    Default Another Carbatec Height Adjustable Workbench

    Hi Fellow Work Bench Builders

    I've been contemplating what sort of work bench I should build and had narrowed down my choice to the Robert Lang designed 21st-Century Workbench the design of which appealed to me. However when I got the quote for timber plus dressing it was a cost I could not justify as a novice.

    Then last week the thread on the Carbatec bench came up and caught my interest. The price was right and the critique on Stu' Shed seemed reasonable. So I placed a order last Wednesday (14th) and it arrived today. I'm pretty happy with that sort of service, both Carbatec and Star Track Express.



    So I got stuck into examining the contents when I arrived home from work. I know the bench is light-weight compared to the robust examples being posted on this forum but it will suit my purposes for now.

    However a couple of elements are of concern - that being the the small size of the screws to fasten the vices to the underside of the bench and the amount of play in the cup foot of leg extensions.



    Anyway I post some more pictures when I assemble the bench.

    Hi Yosam

    I checked the Carbatec bench out as well at to be honest for "proper woodworking" I spotted to many short comings.

    I too am a novice/intermediate woodworker but have taken on the challenge to build a Frank Klausz replica. It is not as hard as it looks!!!! I promise! I picked up some old crusty hardwood for 200 bucks and milled it down and the thing is taking shape.

    Part of becoming a good woodworker for me is the lessons and mistakes made by making a workbench.

    Check out Finewoodworking.com , their series in getting started in woodworking has a bench that is rock solid, cheap to make and will last you many years to come. The whole thing is supported by threaed rods, looks good and is very functional.

    As far as your feet for the bench go, they look frail but to stop them adjustung by themselves try a little tack weld on them. As for the vice screws, well what can be said really. If I was you I would look at some carriage bolts and counter sink them from the top. Not being an expert on this matter maybe others might have different views. Just my view that is all.
