Carver's workbench
Warning! Explicit images of very sloppy work , could hurt your sensibility
So folks , this has been a busy year so far- I moved from Spain to France , found a job , a house and a car , half-learnt the language ... it was time to build a workbench!
The problem is , most of my gear is still in Spain , and this was to be done hand tools only , and without a workbench to work on.....oh , my...
As I just arrived to the place , no idea where to look for some decent timber , so I desided to do it from softwood from the local DIY store
The timber was not thick enough , so I desided to glue some proper legs , and then plane them to the same (more or less) size and thickness , with the hope to achieve sqare section - or get close to square , at leastLast edited by Moderator; 14th August 2011 at 08:10 PM. Reason: fix typo in title

So, after a very unusual (for me ,as I'm not a Darksider)session of hand planing , I had the legs ready for the job of cutting tenons and mortises.Than I driled the holes for the 30MM. dowels that will hold the bottom rail (reinforced with 2 X 120mm. screws each) And I was sure I driled that holes in the right places , too On the last pic to the right you see the glued sides of the base(hope that makes sense) - dont miss the plastic bag in the background

I was not , of course , expecting to get the perfect tenons with a set-up like that , and I wasn't disapointed - some were passable , other , real crap
-not to mention the hole I driled to the wrong side of the line!
anyway , it was time to cut the big tenons for the rails that join the to sides together .The tenon is 140mm. wide. It's a slow and painful process...the secret is, dont mind the pain.(Ian Norbury)

So I've grabbed a seat, a coffee and a couple of TimTams and am having a watchregards

Reckon there's something good about woodworking when it gets as honest this.

So , now that the base was ready , it was time to think about the top- and I didn't fancy at all the idea of softwood top Fortunately , a chef d'atelier at my new workplace had to buy a pile of beech just in time , lot of it was left , and I could buy a piece big enough for my benchtop
I was given permission to use the shop's machines in the lunchbreak , and you see the result: a 58 mm. thick top , and 120 X 40 sides to prevent it from getting wrong ideas On the last pic the groove is finished with a chisel , ready for the dovetailsIt's a slow and painful process...the secret is, dont mind the pain.(Ian Norbury)

A little note re. the previous post - the cut in the benchtop was made with a router before gluing the top , it's there so the piece to be carved could be moved from side to side...all will be revealed
