Default Confused about dogs, cats, mice, etc

Just finishing my 1st ever workbench (in fact, my 1st ever woodwork job - discounting the pencil box at school).
I know you have to mount dogs on the top but how many, where, etc? What other bits n bobs do you need? And how the dickens do you install them? Do you route holes in the benchtop - I'm kindda nervous of ruining my benchtop.
Final newb question - I don't want to chip the corners, edges of the top so much. Do I put an edge around it - with what (hardwood, Tas Oak)? I want something that's hard but kindda nice looking.
Cheers, Bin (and sorry for the shamefully noob questions)

    Hi

    THese are very useful:
Veritas® Dogs & Pups - Lee Valley Tools - Woodworking Tools, Gardening Tools, Hardware Supplies
    as are these:
    Veritas® Hold-Down - Lee Valley Tools

I would start off with 2 dogs and 1 Wonder dog. You need to drill a vertical 3/4inch hole in the bench. Mine are about 75mm from the edge and about 300 mm apart. Sometimes a board spanning the bench is useful so I have one that fits over the dogs on either side. In other words it is useful for the dog holes on either side to be parallel and the same distance apart. I have just had to learn to be not too precious about the top of the bench.

I find just one is enough but you must use a sensible feed rate.

Thanks to you both, very helpful. Yep, I like the look of Veritas - they seem an excellent manufacturer/retailer.
Groggy, may I ask what kind of wood that is for the legs/rails? Looks great.
    Nice doggy by the way...

The legs are a mixture of Blue Gum and other standard Oz timbers. The top is Jarrah and the lighter coloured 'rail' is a temporary support made from Tas Oak. The dog is a life support system for a stomach (also known as a Labrador).
