Default Dawn quick release wood vice - adjustment?

I have three Dawns on my work bench, two quick releases and a normal.
Different sizes, bigest quick release was my Dads'.
It is the one I am having trouble with.
It is stiff to wind and sometimes the mechanism wont work at all eg wind handle and jaw does not move.

I have taken it out and cleaned all the dust etc out, the half nut? seems OK as does the lift block cut out where the quick release bar slides.

I see that there is a bend in the quick release bar. I am wondering if that needs 'adjusting'?

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks
    Lyle.

OK, I'll take some photos of the vices installed and their quick release bars and we can compare.
Two heads are always better than one, apparently.

Found this link via a deeper search on the forum. https://www.woodworkforums.com/f11/da...release-75672/

This could be my problem. The thread half-nut does not have a spring to keep it up against the threaded rod. Both of my vices are missing this spring.
I might find a suitable spring and try it out.
My vices do not have the threaded rod cover either. Hmmmm.

Is the quick release bar on your vice straight or does it have some bends in it?

    Lyle.

Spent some time trying to put a spring onto the half nut, unsuccessfully.
But did some tinkering with the quick release bar and straightened it a bit, now works as advertised. Also had the bar in upside down. The mounting hole is offset, and I found that the offset has to be to the outside of the vice.

Found a real problem on my other vice (the No 7). It looks like the guide bars are bent! Tinkered with it for ages and couldn't figure why yhe jaws would not close without a V gap. Also hard to close, the handle was tight-ish.
Finally put a straight edge on them and found the bend. Whoever owned it before me must have put a massive amount of force on them to do that.
Now I have to find a kind workshop with a press to try and straighten them.
