    Default Dawn Vice "Racking"

Reposted due to last nights server meltdown:

I have an old no 10 dawn woodworking vice that has a "lump" as I wind it in. I also have checked, and there appears to be some racking from left to right.

I don't think it is the screw, and it is over the entire length of the thread, and it spins freely winding out.

If anyone has any pointers it would be greatly appreciated.

Have you checked that the two guide rods are straight? If someone has forced the vice with a load only on one side the guide rods could have bent. In which case you could contact Dawn for spare rods.

    Cheers

    Default Try rotating the rods

I have a Number 8 Dawn vice that I have just recently restored. It had the same problem as you're experiencing. By rotating the rods (mine will "spin" with a bit of effort) I eventually found a sweet spot where the vice stopped bumping. Bit of paste wax on the rods and I've had no problems since. Just seems the vice has a comfort zone where it's very happy to easily run in and out.
