Festool dominos for bench dogs
Timbernut has got me thinking about a new bench build.
The question is whether 10mm dominos would make good bench dogs?
I was thinking of using them in the front and tail vices and along the bench.
Would love to hear some comments

Don't think the 10mm deep crust Dominos pizza will work myself.
Sorry, could not resist.

I use them in my assembly bench for just that reason with a twist.
I thought about traditional dog holes, but thought to myself I've got a Domino here so why not.

Sounds good.
Do you think they would break if used on a new bench?
Fly - I think I would rather eat a Festool domino than one of those pizzas - YUK

Give them them a try, I think you'd need to exert a lot of pressure on them before they break.

I'm amazeed I got anyone thinking about anything... I'm flat out thinking for myself...
I have a Domino too, and considered the same approach but given that I'm planning on a 65mm thick top (not as hefty as Groggys bench, but still quite chunky) I figured longer bench dogs (ie the more traditional type) would be less prone to pulling out when under claming load and then the flexing pressures when the held piece is worked.
I'll be going for 3/4in round bench dogs of the Vertias variety, and am about to order some Gramercy holdfasts to use in the same 3/4in holes.
If anyone else wants some Gramercy holdfasts sing out NOW before I place the order with the US suppliers.

It is your main vice option that has got me going.
The domino idea is mainly for the front of the bench so i can use a Festool vac clamp, so holes right through would stop the base from gripping. Not worried about the holes filling up as the vacuum cleaner will always be near.
I was thinking of making a few bits of ply with dominos in as well and maybe have the 20mm holes in other parts of the bench for clamping down.
Where are you getting your holdfasts from?
My bench wont be one for the traditionalists and certainly wont be like Groggy's monolith just the convenience of a vice that can be used for working on drawers, a bit of mass and the combination of today's tools i.e. the Domino.

My Domino holes are only about 10mm in, so they're not all the way through - it works a treat.

Ive been using this type of Domi Dog for years and its ever let me down. Just plunge into your bench an 8mm mortise (first tight setting) then using your pin/paddle making a second plunge next to it (on the 2nd width setting) and the Domi Dog will slip right in. Quick, easy and ultra strong.
The one shown below has two sides for different thickness stock you are working on.

Kapex, getting the Gramercy Holdfasts from 'Tools for working Wood' in the US.
I will probably be ordering around 10 of them (when a couple of guys respond to offline emails).
Current price (including postage) is ~ 27 USD depending on how many I order. If you want to jump in on it, you'll need to PM me for my personal email address, and we can take that conversation offline (due to new Forum rules regarding Bulk Buys). I'm happy to include any newcomers up till about Tues next week, but any later and you may miss the boat.

Lignum, that is exactly what I was thinking. If the 8mm ones have never failed then 10mm would be bulletproof.
Better whip some up quick before the patent is issued!
Timbernut, PM sent regarding holdfasts

I bought my Gramercy holdfasts here in Oz from Michael Connor, price was pretty good.

Hey Groggy, thanks for letting me know. I've emailed him as well, we'll see how his prices compare.
