How to fit a tail vise to an existing bench
I have a 2400x900 hardwood very solid bench. I would like to incorporate a tail vise and was wondering if it is possible/practical to add one to the front?

I hope so.
I bought a tail vice to add to my existing bench.
You should have plans with the vice. If not you will find the by searching the web.
Mine is intended to go on the end of the bench like you see on a traditional bench.
This allows you the full length of the bench to us to support the work piece.
Is this what you intend or do you want to fit it across the end of the bench?Scally

Hi Ken
I have been reading Christopher Schwarz's workbench books (and dreaming).
He says retrofitting a tail vise is difficult but not impossible. He shows a version he used which includes using a veneer press vice, a big mortice out of the end of the bench, some dog holes and an end cap bolted on with 4 coach bolts.
I have also looked at the Lee Valley retro fit tail vice, expensive but looks the goods.
At the moment I am using a Lee valley Wonder Dog and Bench dogs instead. It can be fiddly, but certainly holds stuff in place. Just drill some 3/4 holes in the bench top.
Good luck
Pedro

Ken, what type of tail vise are you considering?
A twin screw is very doable.
A Record-type is quite easy.
A wagon vise is the most complicated, but still doable.
I see that you are in Perth. You are welcome to drop in for a chat and any help. I am in Rossmoyne.
