    I have been thinking about this comment and get the impression that the front vise is made in this way to give it more spring and holding power with out crushing the piece that you are holding. Or I reading too much into this?

    The advantage is that you have no screw or guide underneath. So you can clamp a piece in the vice vertically without obstruction.
