Default Making the Guy Dunlap small bench

Wow I like that guy. I just like the way he does stuff.
Here's the video. How To Build This Small Sturdy Hand Tool Workbench//Woodworking How To - YouTube

I've figured out that I can build this with either 50mm or 38mm rough sawn boards.

If I use 50mm, it's about 30 linear metres, of 100 and 150mm wide boards.
If I use 38mm, it's about 45 lm of same width boards.

I wanna use a medium density, lightish colour hardwood with fairly clean and straight grain.
    VIC ash comes to mind.

However, I'm getting quoted north of $40/lm for select grade, ex GST ex delivery. Bit rich.

What species are folks using for a more economical build?
Going to feature grade is probably a start.

I really love blackwood, but it's not cheap either, and I'd thought it'd be a bit soft.

    Whaddaya reckon?

Have a look for F17 structural hardwood. It'll be Vic Ash around these parts. The odd board will have a lot of visual defects, but mostly it's pretty good. I think you will find it'll be cheaper than 40bux per meter too, lol.

There's an idea. F17 KDHW from the local timber yard. I've got a nice old school one just at the end of my street too. I'll see what sizes they carry. It doesn't even matter if there's some junky stuff in there, as this build uses a lot of face laminations.

I can't expect it's gonna finish as nicely as furniture grade. But who cares? It's a utility bench, and I'm going to make mistakes, so it's basically practice!
