I also didn't put anything behind the front vice, as it would have been awkward to get at even when the vise wasn't in use.
Know this one well. I keep my feather boards, bench hook, shooting board and a bunch of router jigs in a bench cupboard behind my front vice and every time I need to use one I have something in the vice in front of the door. In my next bench I plan to put the door to access this on the side of the bench. When I mentioned this to SWMBO she said, "It won't help. you'll have to move all the crap you pile up against the sides of your bench to get at it".

It doesn't matter how innocent the idea is.....a SWMBO's logic will always prevail.

My under-bench cupboards stop at about the level of the apron, which is necessary to open drawers & doors, of course, but allows plenty of room for dogs & holdfasts above. The cupboards are set back enough that the rubbish from the front row of dog holes falls to the floor. The other dog holes are either to the left or behind the cupboard area, so very little stuff accumulates on the cupboard tops, fortunately. This layout suits me, but everyone has different needs.

Bang on the money with that design!!

Eaxactly the sort of idea I had in mind. Now that I know it isn't a completely silly idea I think I will go ahead with it. Thanks a bunch and I promise to only 'borrow' a little of the design.

    Cheers again

Ain't no patents on any part of my bench, Gabriel! The bench itself is a loose copy of one Frank Klausz published in Fine Woodworking mag, sometime in the early 80s. Cupboards & drawers are, well, cupboards & drawers, so please feel free to utilise any idea you get from my bench. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, & all that.....

BobL, I had to chuckle at your better half's riposte. I imagine it's spot-on, if your shed is remotely like mine. I gave up making New Year's resolutions to keep my shed tidier, ... about 25 years ago....

    Cheers,

I have a full set of drawers on both sides of the under storage area with a small open centre which stores my Kreg stuff. What I did was put a top on the drawer "box" which is open at the front and back and has a gap of approx 150mm between the top and underside of the bench table. If needed I can all ways use compressed air to clean off the box top and the top keeps everything clean in the drawers.
