Astro,
Been contemplating a solution for a while now. Like you idea of a box in a box.
Might just be the solution I need.
I think an airtight box in a box is not ideal so I might leave a 2-3mm gap allround. Then drill down between the two boxes and use some brass rods between them to stop the racking and in raising and lowering should stop it jamming.

Top is 1800x770x75mm, Blackbutt base (legs/feet 90x90).... 2 vises..... lower shelf 19mm ply - approx 1300x600.
I haven't weighed her, but the top is a 2-person-hernia-inducing struggle to move anywhere.... I've moved some fat dudes on stretchers, and they were lighter I'm sure!
I'll attach a pic in a minute....

Top will be 1.8 x .77 x 0.075 x density of wood in kg/m^3. Unless it is exotic wood it will have a density of ~750 kg/m^3 so ~78 kg, base might be the same. 19 mm ply sheet of those dimensions is only about 12 kg. I forgot about vices, say 10 kg each, all up probably 200 kg - close enough to 250 for me
