New multipurpose bench - fixed fence, moving router and drill?!
Hi everyone, I've been a bit of a lost sheep in recent years but I'm finally getting things together and setting up the woodworking side of my workshop. At this stage my level is mostly DIY-grade pine and ply, home reno and workshop storage sort of stuff. The future probably holds 4WD/camper/caravan fitouts, maybe some basic furniture. I do a bit of metal and leather work too.
I have a large, 6m long workbench along one wall of the workshop, of steel pallet racking with a plywood top set 90mm below the working height of the nearby table saw. I'm about to add pieces of 90x45mm hardwood, set on edge, across the narrow dimension to raise the working height to match the table saw, with clearance between them for the beds of a mitre saw and metal cutoff saw and the other tools and detritus that typically clutter a bench (these saws will lift out to manoevre full size sheet goods to the table saw).
So I'm imagining this as a multipurpose cutting and woodworking bench, with a full length fixed fence (save for the sections where the saws drop in). I'm contemplating designs for adjustable router and drill mounts so that they can work with the fixed fence line.
I guess this kind of setup is not common, does it sound reasonable or like a terrible idea?! Does anyone know of any examples of movable underslung router mounts?

Ok, so the concept has evolved a bit, and I figured I'd post updates here for anyone interested, even though the thread title may be becoming obsolete!
I'm thinking I may take another tack with the router. Not because it wouldn't be fun to make an adjustable router base, but because I'm now using the space under the bench for timber storage and would prefer not to intrude upon it. I might go with a more traditional solution at the table saw. However, I am building the bench with a view to using a router sled on it in the future.
The drill is still an interesting problem. Essentially I am considering a radial arm solution, which I may have to make myself.
The bench surface itself will now be a 'grid' of T-shaped members (with 90x45 forming the top of the T and 30x45 forming the upright) attached to 18mm ply, on a steel pallet racking frame. The working surface is therefore 90mm above the plywood 'tray', which will accommodate the mitre saw and metal cutoff saw, so that their beds sit level with the working surface and they share a fence line. The T profile means I can clamp anywhere, and the saws will simply lift out if I need the extra work surface.
The design will incorporate 19mm dog holes on 100mm centres, for future versatility and the ease of making and locating jigs with simple dowels.
I'll see if I can post some pics of the design and progress.
