Gday all
Have spent many hours over the past few months reading many posts and blogs and thought I should add to them. Was a keen wood worker when I was younger and now settled and with a nice size garage of my own am keen to start again. As with many it seems my first project will be a workbench. Am sourcing my timber from Tile Importers which seems to be pretty well priced. Am using many different designs but mostly based on one I found in a book I found in the local library by Christopher Schwarz, Workbenches form design & Theory to Construction and Use. My first step will be to laminate the top which will hopefully doing this weekend. Am using 65 x 32 hardwood. After much research have found different glues being recommended. The main 2 are Titebond III and Techniglue. Am slightly leaning towards Techniglue as seams to be stronger but would prefer to use Titebond for ease of application. Further advice on this would be appreciated. I will try set up a blog showing the progress as I go along.
Thank you in advance for all the great information I'm sure I will receive and I hope I can provide some back at some time.
Cheers
Shane

Shane, I think you will find the Titebond adequate. If the timber is going to split it won´t do so on the glue line.
Remember to alternate the direction of the end grain (growth ring pattern ) as you glue up each board. This helps to combat excessive movement,

G'day Shane,
regarding glues, Titebond II is perfect for this, Titebond III won't give you any advantages for the extra cost. Techniglue I've found isn't much chop for laminations for some reason, I think it's because it's too brittle. *shrugs*

Thanks for all your advice. The progress with the bench is slow a bit like my updating of this forum, but I'm in no hurry. I had to stop on the bench for a while and build our new family member his home, but he seems happy with his new pad(last photo). It does still need a few little things done and a paint job and I might insulate it oneday, but thats another storey.
So back to the bench and there was a change in plans for timber size and ended up using 6 pieces if 145 x 45. I think this will be thick and strong enough for what i need. I have finished laminating the top and have planed it fairly level. As shown in the 2nd last photo I have glued another board across the bottom at the end to install a twin vise hopefully. Was then planning on glueing another board as an apron or skirt or whatever its called to the end so the vice back was 1 full piece with no joins. Does anyone think this is not necessary or if it is necessary should I glue it up with a spline in the end grain of the bench? Also if I only have all this extra timber on one end of the bench should i offset the legs a little for the bit of extra weight at one end or is it not enough to worry about??
Thanks again for your help and until I can buy one for real here is something for your help

Shane, that looks very strong but I would also put a couple of screws per board In each of your cross supports.
your idea for the vice is sound and I would most certainly use a spline.
