Thread: Long-overdue workbench build

Just a bit over half an inch actually, Chief. The leg levelers do not actually interact with the ironbark at all, just pass through the hole drilled through them into the red gum.
That's what they are sold as but in reality the raker blade is a fraction shorter than the right and left teeth so the cut is not quite flat bottomed. I got quite a few of these blades probably 10 or more years back when Triton was in receivership between ownership changes. The receivers were selling off accessories at giveaway prices. That was one of the two new triplecut blades I had left.
Me too but it won't be today - competing priorities. Tomorrow is not looking good either, I have to go on a little expedition with my chainsaw and come home with another trailerload of free timber. Its a dirty thankless job but someone has to do it. Anyone know any good uses for Apple and Pear wood?

Its been a while since I did anything on the workbench. Health problems got in the way for a while then I took a little sidetrack into some blacksmithing/knife-making skills. When you get an opportunity like the one I got to broaden the skillset into something that I had been interested in for a long time, well the only sensible thing to do is to grab ti with both hands.
Anyway, just as I was about to get back into the workbench build a potential disaster struck. Our landlord is putting the house on the market so all projects are on hold until we either move or find out we can stay.
Hopefully we may get to stay. If so I hope to get back to the build pretty much straight away. If not then as soon as I am set up in a new shed.
In the picture you can see how it will look if you imagine the shoulder vise over the third leg of the left trestle and the tail vise on the right hand end. It is hedl together by gravity in that pic of course, but its not to far off to have the trestle/base completed (the stretchers all fit into the trestles now ) and for the main parts of the top to be all laminated together.
I will post another update once the house problem is resolved and I get back to it.
Apologies to anyone who has been hanging by their fingernails waiting for progress.

Well Doug, the base looks great, but the top needs a bit of levelling
How did I miss this build when you started? I'll keep an eye out now.
Sorry to hear about your ill health and the nasty landlord. Let us know how you fare.

I managed to find some available time when my back was not too bad to make a bit of progress over the last couple of days.
I had been working on both the base and the top for a while, just putting sub-assemblies together, dressing and laminating stock to prepare for the next stages etc. The other day I decided I need to concentrate on the base until it is finished.
All the major components of the base are pretty much cut out and the majority of the joinery is cut. The biggest thing left to finish was the means of securing the long stretchers between the two trestles with bolts. I had already (long ago) drilled the bolt holes through the trestles and into the stretchers but had not made allowances for the nuts.
I put a 2" forstner bit in the drill press and drilled a hole in each end of the two stretchers - like this:

Last Saturday I got the lathe out and turned a length of 2" redgum dowel to match the holes. I cut the dowel into lengths equal to the depth of the holes and cut part of the circle away to create a flat surface for the washer and nut to seat against and glued the redgum disks into the holes:

I then drilled through the disks and mortised out enough clearance space to get a spanner onto the nut and it all goes together nicely.

I put all the bolts in and it holds the base together very squarely and rigidly - and the trestles haven't been glued yet.

I glued up a panel out of two glued up panels recycled from an old Ikea bed to make the shelf to go between the stretchers. Ikea say it's Baltic Pine or something but it looks just like crapiata. I cut up another Ikea glued up panel back down into its component strips to make the cleats to support the shelf. Once the shelf components are sorted I can clean up all the parts of the base, do the glue-up and then apply a finish. If all goes well the base may be finished this weekend.Last edited by doug3030; 13th April 2018 at 02:32 PM. Reason: pictures did not load properly

I have the same issue with not seeing photos. Oddly enough, the Email alert I received has hyperlinks in the text where the pictures should be; but clicking on those brought up error messages anyway.

Ok I have edited the post above so that hopefully the pictures now show. Here's a couple of bonus pictures.
I had to do a little modification to the washers or deepen the mortise - modifying the washers involved less risk of making a hole right through the stretcher onto the more visible front face. It also gave me an opportunity to play with another expensive toy

The panel I glued together to make the shelf for between the stretchers - recycled Ikea bed parts made from "Baltic Pine" - (Crapiata Scandanavia)
