Still raining, so more time to work on the bench (how come it rains every time I take holidays)

Almost ready to fit the vice, just a couple of more coats of oil on the top. I'm happy with how the Rubberwood panels have come up, the only problem is it looks too good to put a vice on & use. When I decide on what tail vice to fit, i'll put some dog holes in then.

The new & the old. It will be so good to be able to plane on something that doesn't move across the floor with each stroke.

Definitely murphy's law. Every planned garage time for me seems to fall on a 35C or higher day.

Your bench is looking great, almost too pretty to work on

At last, I now have a proper workbench that I don't have to hunch over & chase across the floor with every stroke of the plane I planed the vice jaw in it today, BLISS. The jaw is only temporary, just 3 pieces of meranti glued together. When I find something else suitable, I'll change it.

When funds permit I'll fit either an HNT Gordon or Veritas inset tail vice.

I picked up the floor mats at Bunnings for $11 each, they're made from that ground rubber that is used in kids playgrounds. Very cumfy to stand on & quite heave, so they dont move around on the floor.

    Hi Mike,
Sorry mate but I'd managed to miss this entire thread. It looks fantastic, well done! It is a very special zen thing to have your own bench, made by YOU to suit YOU.

Thats probably because in all of the years I've known you, you've only taken a handful of holidays??

Finally got round to fitting a tail vice to the bench & putting some dog 'oles in. The blue ribbon? Earlier this year SWMBO bought me tickets for a concert for my birthday, but ol' Murphy struck again with my back going out the day before the concert, leaving me flat out in bed. Thinking of who might like the tickets, they were gratefully accepted by Mr & Mrs Fletty. A few weeks later Fletty calls round to my place, bearing a replacement birthday present in the form of an HNT Gordon tail vice, complete with ribbon
The dog holes were precision located with a tape measure, pencil & eyes.

A true craftsman would throw away the tape, close his eyes and do it by feel alone

    .....but it still looks good!

I'm still too scared to drill holes in my bench. Maybe when it's knocked around a bit more I might give it a go.
    Cheers, Bob the labrat

Well, he calls himself a 'gentleman woodworker'. Now we have incontrovertible proof of the first bit, at least....

But I can't figure out how you use the ribbon, doesn't it come with a handle?

And Bob, you gotta remember, it's a bench - it has to work for you! (Though I confess I still remember the pain it caused me when I put a switched-off but still-spinning router down on my fairly new bench without de-plunging it fully. That was a very long time ago and it's been re-surfaced a couple of times, but the scar is still there as mute accusation of my stupidity. )

I now realise that I did read the drawing incorrectly. That is really great work. Looks terrific.
