A question of dogs.
I have the over all plans for my workbench. I'm curious about dog holes. I have the tools to make the bench with square, round or both. The round holes seem to offer a lot of flexibility, but is there a need for square holes? I'd be grateful for an insights.

The only reason I can offer for going to square holes/dogs is that you can make your own square dogs from tough hardwood fairly easily, whereas making round ones from hardwood would be harder. Timber has an advantage for not being as injurious to tools as metal dogs should tool accidently meet dog.
To counter that, there are a range of screw dogs available for round holes that effectively create a vice system, and nothing similar for square holes that I am aware of.

I've had several benches over the years and celebrate the day I opted for round dogs. They offer so many more possibilities and it's much easier to form the holes.

I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.

One advantage of round dogs is you can make new dog holes very easily if you need to.
