Recommendations for vise pads
What is everyone using for lining the clamping surfaces of their vises? The old mans has felt, it's had felt for as long as I remember, it's about 5 mm thick but amazingly there was no stash of it when we cleaned out the shop when he died. Leather? I thought maybe one of those thin Huega carpet tiles might be ok, that never wears out. Thanks.

Leather (rawhide) has been a used for a long time (I've seen a leather lined vice in a medieval era luthiers workshop in northern Italy) and is what I lined my main bench vices faces with 14 years ago and they have indeed worked very well despite the significant abuse especially to the main vice.
Last year i decided the faces on the main vice were in such poor shape they needed replacing. Based on a recommendation from Derek Cohen I decided to use something called "Crubber" (a cork rubber matrix) and that also works well. I did some testing and found they are pretty similar, with the leather having a slightly better grip at low pressure and the Crubber is slightly better at higher pressures.
It depends on the level of abuse (which in my case is "high") but after about 6 months use, the Crubber appears to be more easily damaged than the rawhide.
If you are a low level abuser this would not be a problem.
If I was to go it again, for my use I would probably go with the leather.

I have been using Australian oak panels for 40+ years, my Grandfathers vice which I have has Oregon panels 100 years old still going fine, but in saying that they are only ever used for Cabinet Making and the like, I don't
use them for welding or bashing bits of metal etc.

In most vices the chops are held by two screws in each. I change these out to suit the timber I am working at the time. Much of my work is in Australian Cedar for which I use cedar chops. For hardwoods I install a set of hardwood chops. Both sets are lined with deer skin.

Would the rubberised cork sheet you can buy at super cheap auto/eBay (3.2mm thick?) for gaskets work ? How thick is crubber ? Saw a reply to a blog post recommending a gasket material.

On my Dawn vice I fixed a peel and stick rubber sheet from Bunnings.
On my QR vice I am trying Modwood plastic composite,
too early to decide yet but so far so good.
