Thread: Redefining the Aussie WorkBench
-

After I get close to the line I attack the finese work with my 3 amigos!
A LN LA JAck
LV LA Smoother
and my fav the LN LA Block Plane.
These dudes make quick work of tidying things up. I tend to rough things out with the JAck then clean thing up with the Smoother n the Block plane. (Works for me)
I don't think I'd really need many more HAndplanes JUst maybe A LN No4 Bench plane n I reckon that i'd put the icing on the Cake.
I love a Handscraped finish so I did a bit of screaping to cap her off (Notice the finish)
Tomorrow I'll hopefully finish shaping the foot of my Bench

Decisions Decisions??
Gidday
Ok I'm at a critical design phase and would like some feedback from forum members on what you guys think would be the best joint to use here??
This is a critical joint so I want it to be as solid as I can get. I'm even considering using pocket holes to add mechanical strength to the glue join.
West System Epoxy or Hide Glue (Which will make the join repairable) I'm not to sure which way to go yet?
As far as the joinery goes I'm leaning towards twin tenons to increase the glue surface and hopefully add a bit more Rigidity. I'll try to do a CAD drawing of it.
Thoughts from members really appreciated......................All ideas welcome

How 'bout a combination? ...this is one of my favourite shaker joints, oft used in benches and similar.
The upright and wedges are M&T'ed into the cross-piece, two pegs run all the way through both wedges and the upright. You could make 'em exposed square pegs to add that li'l bit of "ooh & aah" factor.

Fantastic Stuff Fellas,
REally appreciate the ideas and reckon both of you are onto something here. I'll mull over the designs and see if I can come up with a hybrid.

Forum Hybrid Joint
I reckon this ones a cracker
Looks like no chance of racking to me and i should be able to do most of the cuts on my SCMS n tenons mortises on the Woodrat.
Tidy up with a chisel n theres ya Apples. Needles to say she looks like a very strong joint!!

I don't know Lou, I think I like your original design with just the twin tenons. I think that would be enough. If you want to sure, just wedge them from the bottom.

Morning All
Has any one seen the benches in FWW & shop-notes? In the Tools and Shop ed there is a bench made from ply wood base and top looks very interesting.
Also shop-notes have plans to build a cabinet bench which I like.

I'll read back through this all later. WOW what a bench. Mine is just radiata joined with M&T joints a couple of braces and that is it. It gets belted every which way and has stains on it from glue and ugliest of all sharpening grindings. But it is a bit of a beat the heck out of it and then go from there sort of work bench. If it dies on me then I will just make another one.
Mind you my woodworking has come along a bit since whenever I made it so the next one would be different.

I began at the beginning, 7 pages back, and took every diversionary link up to about page 4/5. When I awoke, page 8 had been added and I decided to read that - so you now have a magnificient workbench
I think I'd like to have.
If I did have it, I'd make two additions:
* A false top (locating-pins attached); and
* A fold down, permanently attached, extension (either side, end, or both).
This has been a fascinating journey.
