Default Reinforcing pine leg for wheels

I'm a bit iffy about attaching these swivel locking wheels to the base of this pine frame.

The rails are secured in open ended mortises that are also pinned with a couple of dowels through the tenons. The M8 coach screws for the wheel plate are, I'm thinking, too close to the sides/corners and I fear the possibility of them breaking out of the soft wood with a bit of lateral force.

If my suspicion is correct, could I glue and dowel a block of 20-30mm thick hardwood (4 dowels rotated ~45 deg from wheel plate holes, or just 2 in the unmortised areas and away from the coach screws) and put similar length (or slightly longer) coach screws into that instead?

Yes a block of hardwood glued to the base of the leg would be my preference.

But I would only use one dowel in the centre.

I would use the largest size I could acheive...3/4 or 1 inch then screw through the hardwood into the pine leg as well.

    Bewdy. Thanks for the improvement.

What I'll do, if there aren't any objections or corrections, is use a bit of ~30mm thick hardwood as a plate, 1" hardwood dowel centered and recessed 15-20mm into the plate and 20-30mm into the leg, and the 50mm coach screws I have on hand.
