    Default Retro fitting vice screw

Hi all, I bought an old bench on the weekend and the seller had a bunch of tools from a liquidated workshop in oakey. Glad I didn't take too much cash (and disappointed at the same time). I did grab a woden vice screw most probably out of a black smiths leg vice. It is 28mm od with about 1.5 tpi. It has one threaded collar but at the head end it just has a ball with a hole and a handle running through it.
If I wasn't to use this for a leg vice could I just fix the threaded collar to the leg and drill a clearance hole in the moving jaw and let the ball face rub on a washer? There's probably 10mm of shoulder around the threaded rod on the base of the ball.

A pic would help here I guess, ill try to get one tonight.

When you say "wooden vice screw" ... it is actually all metal, right?

I put my head on one side thinking of a blacksmith's leg vice with a wooden screw!

Yes it is perfectly useable like you said - they have been on sale like that for at least 100 years ... I saw it recently but cannot remember the company.

You can find these builds online once you figure out the right search terms ... leg vice/metal screw/metal acme/etc

If you cut one or two grooves into the shaft you could have the head section captured into a leg or other type of vice face by a metal plate.

    Cheers,
    Paul
