    Default Rob Cosman Workbench

Decided to make the Rob Cosman workbench as a dedicated hand tool bench. Due to the cost and availability of suitable plywood in Bundy used pine for the base. Also added a HNT Gordon tail vice. Top is laminated 25mm MDF. Lamp from Ikea. Top has been sealed with shellac and finished with beeswax.

And what are your thoughts? The price of decent plywood right now have definitely gone significantly up.

It is heavy and solid. Fairly easy build except the top is bloody heavy could have done with an extra pair of hands. So far it ticks all the boxes for me and my intended use. It will out last me.

Great job, are you going to make a sliding block arrangement for the lamp?
Someone in the comments mentioned it might also be good for storage of pencils.
Interesting thought, think I'm just gonna copy the original as I like it, easy to make another anyway.

Thanks for the heads up on the Tertial lamp from Ikea, 12 euros! a steal.
I love these style lamps, and have a few of them.
From the images, it looks kinda like it's somewhere between the old, which seems very difficult to find across the world,
and similarly priced ones on ebay and the likes, (which have misleading measurements more akin to the large ones)
Wasn't too happy bout that at the time, but I admit handy for the sharpening station, as the larger ones would be too awkward.

The old ones I found on ebay, and the one at the folks has a 7.5 shade, compared to the measly 5 or 6" shade of the wee one.
    makes a difference,

I'll take measurements later if need be.

I'd like to know if it is the same as the old ones I've got, so if you could include the lamp in a piccy, or take some measurements sometime again, I would be thankful, as these are the best style lamp IMO,
and is the first thing I suggest for folks starting out acquiring some tools.

Not only that, but nice for myself to know of some replacement springs, should I not be able to make some.

    Cheers
    Tom

The lamp is 6.5”. I still have to make and fit the tool well and the sharpening station. Not sure if I will make the mobile lamp fitting. No doubt I will come up with some other extras.

Thanks for getting back to me Bucky.
Lots to be considering if making a tool well, been thinking of hinges vs lift out for a long time on my bench,
various kinds of solutions to address the ramps, whatever else I haven't thought of yet, not to mention the sliding lamp base!

I'd be experimenting with an extra one of those lamps at that price, might look a bit redneck but I found making the shade 7.5 to 8" gives off a lot better light.
Could try getting some cardboard cereal box for the craic.
If considering doing the same with another, try finding a nice light bit of sheet metal, and not the heavy sheet from the side of a microwave which went in the bin!

Bit rough lookin, and easier to make a slightly nicer job if it were t'other way round, but at least it's one piece steel you have to work with.

Once again thanks for the reply
    Cheers
    Tom
