    Unhappy Sanding belt wanders on Makita sander

    Hi All, my first post,
    I have a fairly old Makita 9401 belt sander that has not had a lot of use. I recently tried to use it in my latest project - refurbishing a timber deck, but it seems impossible to get the belt to stay aligned, as it wanders either to left or right, no matter how I change the adjusting knob.
    Has anyone out there experienced this, or have any idea what may be causing this to happen?

    Hi jonontrack,
    Have you removed the plates under the belt and check the mechanism that operates the tracking wheel. There is a graphite flap a cork flap and a steel flap held at the front by screws and flat plate washers. From memory I think there is a spring that puts tension on the wheel it may be stretched or broken or just off.

    you may not be getting enough tension on the belt

    The lever that is on the side to release the tension may not be going fully back into position.

    As you mention it has not been used for a while so there may be a build up of dust and muck so a good clean out may help.
