    Default Sliding deadman thoughts

I am getting close to the point where I will be making the sliding deadman for my new work bench project (separate thread). I am trying to think through how many hold down holes I will need. My thinking is to use the gramercy hold downs that I will be using on the bench top with maybe a dowel pin when I just need support.
Some of the deadmen I have seen seem to have more holes than a swiss cheese. Do I need that many holes? I readily admit that I have never used a deadman so I am not fully aware/appreciative what a deadman can do for me.
Obviously the question of a rank amateur but I would appreciate some insight.
    Thanks

    Hi
My first question is does your bench have an apron? and if yes, how wide is the apron? as this is where the majority of your Swiss Cheese holes will be placed.

If I were building a deadman, for use with a Gramacy holdfast, I'd want to make sure that the deadman was thick enough to grab the holdfast. But this would, IMO, make the deadman difficult to slide side-to-side.
Deadmen typically are made from boards about 25-30 mm thick and are sized to accommodate either 1, 2 or 3 columns of peg holes. In reality, any straight grained board will suffice, so don't fuss about it.

    Thanks for the input Ian.
There is no apron on my bench, just the 65mm top. The Gramercy holdfasts need about 45mm to work at their best so I was thinking of using an offcut from the top taken down to 50mm. I also have some concern as to whether or not ease of sliding will be an issue so I have some Slik Strip which I will place in the V of the deadman to hopefully overcome any problems.
In terms of hole placement maybe I should just start with a few that are likely to be used in the main and then drill new ones as the need arises.

    Just a comment ...
I'd limit the deadman to about 25 to 30 mm thick and use the holdfasts in the legs

My sliding deadman is 44.5mm thick (1 3/4"). I can use the Gramercy hold downs, however I tend to use and prefer the Veritas screw down hold down ...

The base and sliding deadman are in Jarrah.

    Thanks Derek
How and when do you use the lower holes?

The lower holes could be used with pegs to rest a wide panel upon.

Imagine this piece was much wider - all the way down to the lower end of the leg vise (I cannot find a more representative photo) ...
