You know I've seen parallel wedges used before but completely forgotten about them. Will have to give them a shot alongside the doe's foot and see which I like better.

My great uncles used both for different purposes, except that they called the doe's foot a "crutch" - their pronunciation, never saw it written down.

They also used a "prop" as a hold down. A prop was a length of springy sappling about 35mm diameter with a natural crutch (fork) on one end. The crutch was positioned straddling a roof joist, the prop bent slightly and the other end positioned against the work piece on the bench. The springiness of the prop provided the hold down power. Sometimes it was supplemented with wedges. Surprisingly effective.

For anyone that is interested I just recieved a benchcrafted classic leg vice and the solo criss cross.Plus added a pair of Simon James 19mm holdfasts. These weighed 1kg each so it wasn't to bad for the extra postage. All up $730 with credit card fees the lot. This was from the UK and our dollar isn't doing to well against the pound.

You don't always need a vise
