Slab bench?
So its time. I need a decent bench. The knockdown pine and hollow core door version is just annoying now and I've got to bud a decent one.
But.... The thought of laminating the top and dressing up lots of 4x 2s just annoys me. Any reason not to use a big slab of recycled bridge timber or something? Perhaps edge jointed once?

Hi elver,
No reason what so ever, something like old bridge timber should be solid enough I would imagine. I have just built a workbench from a slab of old hoop pine that is 4m long x 600 x 45 on some stud frames and it is certainly solid enough for general wood work.
Regards Rod.

I want to bunnings and bought a dozen redwood garden sleepers for $8 a pop.
They are as green as buggery, literally dripping, so I stacked them up in the sun and baked the hell out of them under black plastic.
Presto, cheap monster hunks of wood.
I chose carefully and grabbed the ones free of holes and knots. Took a bit and they clearly don't like it, but stuff them!
