Vice for new workbench
Hi,
I'm planning for a new (my first) workbench. It will be a small bench to fit my rather small hobby room. It will be around 150 cm x 60 cm. I was considering the Veritas twin vice, but will probably settle for a smaller vice.
Does anyone have any experience with this vice:
Woodworking Vise Type 52 - With Quick Release Mechanism
I'm also considering this one:
Professional Woodworking Vise Type 52 1/2 With Quick Release Mechanism
I think the smaller one will be enough for my needs, but I hope I won't regret the decision afterwards.
The larger one is not that much more expensive, but it is more clumsy, weighs almost the double. 15.7 kg (34.6 lbs) instead of 9 kg (20 lbs). The jaws open a bit more to 342 mm (13 1/2 in.) instead of 210 mm (8 1/4 in.). But is this relevant for me? I'm not sure.
My bench will be about 60 mm thick. I'm making the top out of two oak countertops that I will glue together to get the thickness I want.
Any tips?
Thanks
Staffan

I have a 52 1/2 QR on my bench, which is a similar size to yours. I would certainly recomment it over the smaller, non-QR one as a face vice. Apart from the obvious advantage of the QR, the large jaw capacity allows me to hold all sorts of workpieces. If the jaws won't open wide enough you have to find a workaround. I do also have a smaller, non-QR vice mounted on the end of my bench where it functions as a tail vice.

I would go for the record 52 1/2 as the will be available both new and second hand and cheaply

Interesting, just saw this.
Is the 1½ turn thing normal for a QR vise to release the jaws and activate the QR function? The ones I've seen before just had a lever on the front face that swung half the locking nut away from the thread, and you could do it any time you felt like it as long as there was no tension on the vise. No need to wind it 1½ turns out first.
