    Default Vises and overhang/stringers

    Hi all
I'm planning a bench for my garage, approx 1800x750 or so, and have a Groz quick release vise to attach - I'd like to keep overhang to a minimum at the ends - how have people gotten around the top stringer of the base structure with respect to the vise - drilled/cut to accommodate?? I was planning on using an oversized stringer, then cut cutting a 'slot' for the vise workings.... any other ideas/suggestions?

It may not be exactly what your looking for but i found this discussion in the best of the best, you may find after reading each post that some of it may apply, or spark an idea along the same lines as the discussion progresses.

You could install a very deep front apron like this one:

Because the timbers don't need to be all that thick you can make lots of hole in it for passing through clamps and such as well as the vice and have no significat impact on the structure of the top/apron.

My old bench employ exactly the method you're describing and serverd me well for some years. Though if I had my time over I'd probably done something with a nice deep apron like this one, being simple enough to construct with inexpensive materials.
