This is a better price
Not long enough, at 109mm total length there is only about 60-70mm to cut with. Then an auger is needed anyway. Add to that the difficulty with positioning these in the first place and its easier the way I am doing it.
...and the price! For $300 I am sure I would get a stampede of neanderthals with brace and bits willing to do the holes for me :)
But USD44 to get the first 1.25" done seems like a good deal to me. So I'll go ahead with that anyway.
I've got a 3/4" auger bit here with 220mm depth of cut. mixing imperial with metric, is that allowed?
That works (provided you don't have any in the middle of the bench). :2tsup:
Well that works out to be 222.25mm But then my measurement was put the tape to it, yep that looks like... so maybe I actually measured 222.25
Clamp a straight edge, to use as a fence, onto the bench top. You could even use rebated index marks on the straight edge to keep it all uniform. Just a thought. I wish I had of used a ¾" bit in the router even to just start the holes. I had a hell of a time drilling the extra ones with a forstner bit. (I drilled the dog hole row on the pedestal drill before i glued it together)
Ok Groggy, are you ready for the 'K' method? I drilled half the hole depth with the drill press, then I... er... did the rest by eye with a spade bit.
(*runs and hides*)
I guess what I'm trying to say is this; do we all really need to think about it this hard? The old Engineering lesson 'Apply appropriate quality' springs to mind. Granted, Groggy's bench will be the bench mark for future bench builders... er, pun. Well... you know what, I think I've had this debate about appropriate quality with you before. Carry on then, I guess.
I'll shut up now.
:C
I am not going to do it the easy way when a more complicated method is available!
Seriously though, I am not an expert woodworker by any means, I come here to learn and give you guys someone to laugh at. So if you have a good idea I am glad to hear it, that way we all learn something.
