So now I have a bench that just needs the other vice face, and is fairly finished otherwise. I've oiled it a couple of times with raw linseed oil, and maybe tomorrow or so, I'll give the top a coat of "UBeaut Traditional Wax" (great product by the way...!), and I think that I should be able to declare this bench finished...I'm not forgetting anything am I???

Yes, you have forgotten my address to send the bench to ....

Fantastic job, you will be able to spend many an enjoyable hour working on that one

    Default WIP - John's Workbench Mk2!!

Thanks for the compliments everyone. This was an enjoyable build, even if it did seem like it'd never get finished! I really appreciate everyone's input and advice, without you guys, I'm not convinced that I would have finished it...after all, I'd probably still be deciding on vice placement!

The weight of this bench, as it stands with vices, etc is: 190kg or 419lb.

(But I haven't decided if I'm going to put in a bottom shelf or not)

    Default an inspiration

    Hi John,

I must admit that i haven't been following this thread, in fact i just noticed it today while i was killing some time on the forum. This is exactly the sort of build i want to get started on once I have a shed to put it in, at the moment i would have to move the cars to the street which won't work.

Anyway i just wanted to congratulate you on completing your bench and say well done. I hope i get a chance to make something just as nice one day soon.

    Cheers
    Mat

    Thanks Sorgi

Yes I got the holdfasts locally. They were $20 each from a blacksmith in Seacliff. I'll dig up his number and pm it to you. Remind me if you don't get it before Christmas.

Beautiful job John! That's a great workbench.

One question ... are you left-handed?

and one observation ... to chamfer the tops of the dog-holes, perhaps you could have butchered a round-shaft spade-bit and used the brace, or even made a steel plate that you could drop in the hole and turn by hand - like a rotating scratch-stock. I'm only thinking about it because I might come to the same issue eventually.

    Cheers,
    Paul.

    Paul.
Paul, that's a great idea! I gave up chamfering the holes, so I still have a thousand to go (or so it seems!!). I'll try it and post my results.

    No, I'm right handed ...why??

Your picture testing the dog-holes with the block of wood and your scrub plane ... I thought you might have been coming at it from the other direction.

Well done John! You now have a proper command and control station, a place for all the executive decisions, a place where........oh well you know what I mean.
    Cheers, Bill

    Thank you

At least it didn't turn out like a lump of abstract art!

(Between us, shh don't tell anyone else, but I'm finding it easier to spill things on it. I just have to find the courage to accidentally damage it!)
