which wood to make workbench out of
Hi guys,
I'm fairly new to wood working, I've never really had the space and time, but I've just bought a house in the burbs of brisbane, and would like to start by making a workbench for myself...
What type of wood would one recommend? Obviouslly it doesn't need to be very nice on the eye as its most likely going to get scratched, cut and drilled on a regular basis.

Hi Mark, welcome to the forums.
One of the dangers of reading about other people's benches is that generally your expectations for what consitutes a "bench" goes upwards until it becomes something akin to a piece of furniture.
I reckon you should build it out of pine, plywood or mdf. Don't do what I did and spend hundreds of dollars on some beautiful aussie hardwood (that is bloody hard to work with hand tools)... without the tools to work it with.
Now, if for some reason you *do* have a table saw, good circular saw, random orbit sander, etc, then you should go and see Eco Urban Timbers (Exador on the forums). He has a sale on at the moment because they're moving location so you can probably pick up some good quality hardwood for the price of pine.
Cheers,
JK.
