Default SHOW US YOUR WOODWORKING BENCH - a summary thread

Following on from the Workbench Vises thread, Bushmiller came up with the grand suggestion that we do a summary thread of the benches themselves. This would make a fabulous reference for someone contemplating a benchbuild, as they could use it like an index with links rather than trawling through a plethora of threads.

So, you are invited to post a pic of your bench with a brief description, with perhaps 2-3 smaller pics of important details (i.e. unusual). You may also want to give a short summary on why you like the particular features, and what caused you to go in that direction.

You may not have built a bench yet, but in your research you may have come across other benches that have some great ideas - put them in too!

It can be a bench for Hand Tool use, Power Tool use, or a hybrid - just as long as it's for woodworking (or could be)

If you could use the following as a template, it would greatly assist readability:

    POST TITLE:
    e.g. Roubo, hybrid etc

    PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Hand Tools / Power Tools / Hybrid

    DIMENSIONS in mm:
    (length x depth x height) e.g. 2000 x 600 x 900

    MATERIALS (timber species etc):
    xxxxxx

    VISES INCLUDED:
    xxxxxx

LINK TO YOUR BUILD THREAD (if applicable):
    xxxxxx

    BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
    xxxxxx
    THINGS YOU PARTICULARLY LIKE :
    xxxxxx

THINGS THAT YOU WOULD CHANGE (in retrospect):
    xxxxxx

THINGS THAT YOU WOULD INCORPORATE NEXT TIME :
    xxxxxx

WHAT or WHO INSPIRED SOME OF THE INCLUSIONS (provide links):
    xxxxxx

Ok then - go for it!

I'll kick it off with a pic of Bushmiller's bench

    Cheers

OK, OK to kick the idea away, I'll put in my present work bench 'cos from here the only way is up quality wise.

    Type: "Bespoke" (New-Fangled)

    Dimensions: 2400 x750 x860H

    Material: Recycled, unknown hardwood

Vices: Two vices made from pipe clamps.

    Forum thread: https://www.woodworkforums.com/f213/b...kbench-136565/

Comment: Designed to hold bulky items such as doors for planing the edges or flat on top of the bench. Very versatile for renovation type work

Changes: I would use new pipe instead of secondhand if I built this bench again. However I like this bench as it is and would not change much if anything.

Dead right there. Don't worry FenceFurniture will be on to it . I am assuming it is a pattern maker's vice.

As interest has rekindled it might be a good moment to remind you all that the aim of this thread is to collect all the workbenches that have been posted on the forums: A rogues gallery if you like and I just know there are plenty of rogues out there .

I for one am really looking forward to seeing these benches in the one spot with links back to the original for reference. So please post: You know who you are .

Default Jack of all trades bench

To show why I am following this thread and also Brett's bench vice thread with interest, here is my current workbench.

    PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Usually my Kapex stand, sanding, sitting at, finishing stand, Domino-ing stand.

    VISES INCLUDED:
The whole thing is a vice!

LINK TO YOUR BUILD THREAD (if applicable):
    A trip to Mitre 10.

    BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
Actually, if you don't have a bench these are great. Has served me well for 8 years as an adhoc bench, and especially well over the last 12 months since the bench that was in my shed has been demolished (hence why I'm interested in this thread!).

    THINGS YOU PARTICULARLY LIKE:
I think I'm sentimentally attached to it.

THINGS THAT YOU WOULD CHANGE (in retrospect):
Make it 2m longer, 200mm higher, 700mm deeper and 300kg heavier. Add a tail vice, and a leg vice, put some drawers underneath it, and finish it off with some dog holes.

    Perfect Steve

Just what is needed. Also submissions from those of you who have already posted a thread. You know the Roubos, the Swiss cheese tops etc etc.. Help us out here or I'll have to revert to retrieving blood from rocks .

Default A bench, but not as we know it

It is a bench but I can't say that the work I do on it qualifies as woodwork Just finished it today.

Primary Function: It was going to be a lathe stand but isn't solid enough for that. I might stick a vice on it and call it a metal working bench.

    Dimensions. Size is (about) 600 x 1200.

Materials: MGP10 90x45 (or 35) legs and braces. Top is two pieces of 22mm red tongue flooring glued and screwed together. Lots of 5/16" bolts to hold it together.

Looks like the lathe will have to wait a bit longer, at least until I can find someone to weld one up for me.

[The bench in the background is similar construction but single thickness top. It measures 3600 x 900, the size of a sheet of red tongue. Despite its size, it quite strong perhaps due to the 90x90 legs]

    Default Recycled Hardwood Bench

Here ya go Paul. Just had to get it all typed up ( for the second time. Had it finished and then hit the wrong button )

    PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Planing, chiseling, sawing, assembling, drilling, adjusting, stuffing up, pretty much everything.

    DIMENSIONS in mm:
    The overall dimensions are 1880mm x 620mm x 880mm high. Top is 64mm thick, legs are 94mm square. Dog/holdfast holes are 3/4" or 19mm.

    MATERIALS (timber species etc):
Lots. Tallowood, Jarrah, Red Gum, Blue Gum, Spotted Gum and a few others I haven't been able to positively identify. It all came from the demolition of a 70 -80 yr old (guestimation) house. Just machined up a heap of timber and started building. I did fiddle around with the position of the timbers in the top to give a more aesthetically pleasing effect.

    VISES INCLUDED:
Carbatec Large Face Vice and a Record No. 52 does double duty as an end vice and a tail vice.

LINK TO YOUR BUILD THREAD (if applicable):
    https://www.woodworkforums.com/f213/w...-bench-131372/

    BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
A fairly straight forward and basic bench. Didn't really have a design apart from the fact that it had to be solid and heavy so it wouldn't move and needed to have work holding options within my budget, which was almost non existant. I had the vices for some time before I started building.
    THINGS YOU PARTICULARLY LIKE :
Very solid and doesn't move at all when I work on it.
Good work holding options. Haven't really found anything that I can't get a solid grip on.
An absolute pleasure to have a good bench to work on. I don't know how I got anything done without it and I would not like to go back to working without it.

THINGS THAT YOU WOULD CHANGE (in retrospect):
I would probably go for a wagon vice as it is incorporated in the bench rather than hanging off the end. Having said that I would be loathe to lose the end vice feature.
A quick release face vice would also be nice.
Closer dog hole spacing. Mine are sometimes just that little bit too far apart. Not a big problem though.
THINGS THAT YOU WOULD INCORPORATE NEXT TIME :
    Fancier vices (see above)
Slightly different dog hole layout.(also see above)
Both of these things could be retrofitted to the existing bench but it is working fine for now. I don't do enough to warrant the expense and trouble to alter it at the moment. Maybe when I retire

WHAT or WHO INSPIRED SOME OF THE INCLUSIONS (provide links):
I guess the only inspiration I got was from this forum. I still haven't seen the inside of any of the recent crop of Bench Books.
Groggy's and Dan's builds come to mind.

    Default Knock down split top

Well I will add my almost finished bench to the list. I still have to make tool trays under it and perhaps add dog holes at some stage .

    Function:
General woodwork. Sawing, planeing, chiseling, hammering, glue ups, clamping and bits of non woowork too like fixing bikes an mowers an stuff. Mostly hand tools but a bit of power too.

    Dimentions:
    L 1.82 W 0.60 H 0.910
Legs are 75mm square, top 70mm thick (would have liked a bit more but that was what I had).

    Materials:
Top is mixed pine but Oregon mostly. Base is Sydney blue gum.
Gal bolts hold leg assemblies to stretchers(the knock down feature) and top held on by gal brackets (also for ease of taking apart).

    Vices:
Carbatec Front vice and some no name 6'' vice as an end vice.

    Link to build:

    https://www.woodworkforums.com/f213/a...-bench-165507/

    Brief description:
A split top as I like the clamping options available. The 2 section top is light enough to move by myself in 2 lifts so the bench is portable. Would come apart in 10 mins and same to put together.

    Things I like about it:
Very versitile. Huge amount of clamping and holding options. A big improvementon my last bench
I'll probably find more things when I have had more time using it.
And all recycled apart from the front vice and some hardware.

Things I would change and do different next time:
Well I have not had time to really do much on it yet so early days. I am sure to find something.

    Inspiration:
Mostly from builds on this forum and reading some woodworking mags. I wanted a bench that could be taken apart to move. Be simple to build and not cost an arm and a leg. I also had the wood.

    Regards
    John

I forgot pics but they are all in the buildalong.
