ok i was at the newsagents today looking at the woodwork magazines, and i foudnt his magazine called: 'Popular Woodworking' and on the front it has a workbench with a vice that is similar to the ones at my school, what i mean is the same design but obviously of better quality. his workbench is not what i am aiming to make, but along the same lines, instead of having cabinets all below the bench top, i am just having drawers that go about half way down so i can then still lay peices of timber down.
i will be pruchasing my vices next week, as i have to get the design finalized, and figure out the cutting list, order sheet, etc.
thanks
Rhys

well being only 17 my money matters alot, so i only spend it on what i really need. i have to work my butt off as i have to pay off my car, and also pay for these two major works at school. so i dont really have much money to spare.

Hi Rhys,
have you spoken with Steve at the Lumber Bunker (Gosford) ??
They have a pretty good stock of timber, and can order in stuff from Carbatec.
To solve your dollars problem, you just need to find a customer for the finished bench. Have them pay for the materials of their choice, and you provide the skills to turn timber into a bench.
Cheers,
Andrew

^^ nah this bench is for me. i love woodwork, and i am aiming to get an apprenticeship in cabinet making(but preferably furniture making) by the end of the year. so this is definately for me. plus i am making it the way i want, tyo my height, how many drawers i want, etc.
but if i do make it out of pine the cost wontbe to much, plus my paretns are gonna help me when i need it.

Hey Rhys,
Looking forward to hearing more about how this project goes for you. I'm no expert, but it sounds like you're well on track to building yourself a great and affordable bench you can be proud of (and will get great marks for as well!)
Cheers,
Af.

well i have a bit of an update. i went to the lumberbunker the other day and oirdered 2 vices. very good price considering there was no postage fee. i am going back on monday with my plans and i will be ordering my lumber. he said he will help me with timber selection as he doesn't really stock pine, so he will recommend me some suitable hardwoods.
just would like to say thanks to steve from the lumber bunker for your help so far.

I'd like to see how it finishes up as well, good luck Rhys

ok so i just got back from the lumber bunker, and he has some program that he puts measurements into and it spits out a bunch of proces. man i thought it would cost me a fortune, but i can now think of some other timbers, as justr for my frame in pine is only gonna cost me bout 100 bucks. for another hundred i can use tassi oak. so i wantewd to go tassi oak for a while and now i think i might. your thoughts for a tassi oak workbench??

ok so i have narrowed it donw to 4 timbers i like. Jarrah, Tassi oak, Silky oak, and Red Cedar. One f these will be used for my workbench. so please help me decide, i am not overly worried about the cost, as i have now saved enough.
