Silky Oak , Red cedar ?? sounds a bit posh for a work bench. Even if it is an examination piece.

well it has gotta look reasonable as well as function. how about jarrah or tassie oak. i really both, but it maybe decided by trhe cheaper tassie oak in the end.

Jarrah and T oak IMO would be more suitable surfaces for a workbench - paticularly JarraH - but if you plan on doing fancy joints you should consider the working qualities of the timber. From memory Jarrah can split around end grain.
I don't know how particular your assessors are going to be - but in professional Timber design competitions the judges consider the suitability of the milling/cutting method to the service requirements of the piece.
They look at end grain direction and component size and consider things such as suitability of various joining methods and joints eg tenons having grain running diagonally are regarded as a defect (depending on timber type). All very technical!!

ok. so it seems it going to be either tassi oak or jarrah. tassie oak is nice, but i like the look of jarrah and how dark it is. will ask the lumber bunkerwhen he calls tomorrow which is better suited for my application.
Thanks

ok i am ordering timber tomorrow.
Here is what i am ordering:
Material Section Amount
Tassi Oak 150 x 38 2/1.8 and 1/0.9 (bottom rails)
Tassi Oak 75 x75 2/2.1 (legs)
Tassi Oak 75 x 38 2/1.8 and 1/0.9 (top rails)
i chose tasasi oak because i like the look, solid, strudy timber, and it was a lot cheaper than what i was expecting, (my teacher said about 4 times the price of pine and i was about 2 twice the price. so i said why not, i am only building this once.)

yeah i ill be updating this thread as the progress goes on. i was advised by steve from the lumber bunker to use a very wide bottoi rail, so that is why it is 150, but i think it also looks very nice witht he wider botom rail, as well as providing extra strength.

well i am home and i have unloaded the timber. sorry forgot to take pics, but it was a good trip home. first pulled out of the carpark and the little pile i made fell over. so i pulled over and readjusted it. but it was fine the rest of the way. all i have to do know is make the project. i am about to organise it into what bits of timber are for what part, etc.
