no help on the dovetails? ow well dovetails all round it is. another minor stuff up. i cut the rails to width of 150mm, then my teacher informs me i still have to run them through the thivknesser. well that sucks. so know all bottom rails are 140mm top rails are 70mm and legs are 70 x 70. just to keep everything in proportion.

Dovetails or not
Been having a think Rhys. You might find some difficulty in cutting your dovetails due to the length of the rails. Have look at the splined mitre joints on Rocker's chair for som inspiration.

i am just going to get all the raisl finalized in size befor i rush into cutting the dovetails, and i also have to do a practice joint on a bit of scrap to make sureit will work.lol.

ok sorry for the delay, been busy. here is what has happened:
*decided on dowel joints all round, simple, and effective.
*i have drilled all dowel holes in the rails.
*now i have to sand everything to perfection and then transfer these holes onto the legs.
*vices have arrived, they rule.
i had an assignment due at school for woodwork and this is what happened:
*the assignment had to be a maximum of 4 pages long.
*we had to research 2 things from this list. i chose Carcase Construciton and Assembly.
*there is a girl in my class and she is very good at the subject, mainly at the theory but is good at prac as well.
*rock up to school with my assignment in hand, ask to look at hers, man it was insane. before handing mine in i decide to take drastic action, i rush home, i know have 1.5 hours to redo my whoe assignemnt. i arrive back at school, late, with new assignment in arms and hand it in.
you see, not boasting, i have come 1st in woodwork for the past 3 years at school. know this girl is trying to take it from me. and quite honestly i am afraid she might. so that is why i made the decisiont oredo the whole thing.
hope it all pays off.
any way the thing is, her assignment went for 5 pages, that is over the requirement and the teacher stated that it had to be 4 pages maximum. i dont know what will happen.
anywho, i will tell you all my results when i get them, hopefully monday

If i was marking that paper none of the information on page five would count.
That is if she answers a question in the last page, it's should be as if she didn't answer it at all and her mark should reflect an unfinished assingment mark...
But then again i'm a hard marker. It'll most likely just slide through un-noticed and she'll get the same mark as you.Steven Thomas

assignments still havent been marked, anyway back to the workbench:
i hvae decided on the cabinet below:
*mainly constructed out of Tassi Oak veneered board (not sure what type yet).
*the sides, back of the cabinet are going to be screwed on from the inside onto the rails.
*it will have 2 drawers at the top, with 2 doors, which open to a storage cabinet.
*cabient may have an adjustablke shelf.
also i have managed to figure out how the drawers will be guided:
*strips oft imber will be used to 'guide' the drawers.
*these strips will be used to the sides and bottom of the drawers to guide them.
*useing these strips of timber will be much less hassle than trying to make runner swork, and if i wax the timber strips there shoulf be no troubles with them.
all the holes ahve been drilled for the rails (dowel joints). next week we are preparing for our 'half yearlies' for year 12, so not much progress is gonna happen. honestly i am gonna be studying for woodowrk more than anythign, as i am aiming for this course in tassmania so i have to do well.

Work bench
Sounds like you are on a pretty steep learning curve!
I made a "chest" of drawers for my shed. The bottoms of the drawer sides sit on wooden runners anchored to th partitions separating the columns of drawers.
On the bottoms of the drawer sides I have narrow strips of Laminex. Helps 'em slide no end!
