Workbench advice
G'Day all. 1st post.
I'm planning to build myself a decent workbench for both wood & metal work.
I learned woodwork at School but that was a good 20+ years ago so to say I'm a bit rusty would be an understatement.
The plan is to build the frame from 45 x 90 & 45 x 45 Pine (cheap & easy to get) and the top out of hardwood which I've priced at around $100 for enough dressed 50x200 to make a 1600 x 600 top.
My 1st question is,
What sort of joint should I use for the frame? Would a doweled butt joint be strong enough to join the legs to the rails or should I be looking at something a bit more substantial?
Any advice would be appreciated at this point.
Thanks.
Al

as we all say hi and welcome aboard, sometimes a simple question will lead you anywere.
the joint that you will use is to the level of experence you have, myself would use the half lap as a starter. then you could use the search tab and look at other Workbenchs and how other sawdust makers have done their workbenchs.
let you fingers do the walking, here some links - https://www.woodworkforums.com/attach...hes-bench1.jpg

He looks like a lounge room dog, so easy fixed. I am sure the lounge will be highly comfortable as well.
Google helps..

Thanks Opelblues. Some nice benches there.
I think I need to let it mull over in my head for a few more days & I'll have a good picture in my head of what I want to do.

Al, if this is your first bench, face it you have just started on the road to bigger and better as time goes by.
Bench building is a labour of love.

When I was finally able to set up a shop at my house, I looked no further than what my grandpa did during the Depression. He had salvaged a 12 foot section of bowling lane. It was cut into two sections to make one about 9' and the other went to firewood for the stove.
I made some calls and had no luck as many places apparently have been switching to synthetic lanes. I found a warehouse on about 130 miles from my house that the guy said he "had a few I will sell". When we arrived there were about 150 lanes stacked up all over the place. Sold me a 15 foot section for $100. A couple legs, a cross support and it was all done. Dead solid... Of course, also very difficult to move, luckily placed it in a very ideal place the first time. Guessing it comes it at 300-400 pounds. Ugly, but it works.
I would love to build a really nice one someday. I think they can be absolute works of art.
