    Default Workbench Inspired By Norm

    Hello All,

I am new to this forum and just wanted to show off the progress on my workbench / storage for my garage. I watched some episodes of the New Yankee Workshop and was majorly inspired. I just purchased a Dewalt 744 and a dado blade. and it has really helped. I could not do this with the junker King Canada saw I had before.

This is where I am so far (sorry for the pic quality)

I only have one drawer built and will probably install it tomorrow night.

The bench is 8' long and 26" deep. The top will sit at about 40" off the floor.
Storage area is about 23" deep. There is also some extra toe kick area.

I made a tiny bit of progress this evening but was fighting with having the wrong tools and lack of experience. I mounted a plug on the right side of the bench and installed the drawer sliders. Now I am regretting not getting a decor plug. I will be putting a plug on the left side of the bench as well. There will be no drawers on the left side but the upper drawer for the right side will be narrower because of the plug.

I am going to have three very large drawers in the middle.
The bottom drawers will have about 14" of height clearance.

I need to tidy up the work space before I go any further as it has gotten ridiculous.

    @BobL
Thanks for touching up those pictures. I will try and take the rest of the photos with a real camera, darn blackberry is always handy though.

Ya I don't know what your working with but my garage should be bigger. I find my quality of work goes down when it's too messy because I start to get stressed when I am tripping over crap. This workbench is part of my plan to organize this garage so it can be a small workshop.

Some more drawers installed. Both power plugs installed, not wired yet.

I decided to reinforce the bottom of the two big drawers by gluing a strip of 3/8" plywood across the center underneath. Made a huge difference. With the drawers so long and the bottom free floating it seemed likely that the sides could spread under a lot of stress. The 3/8 ply stops the boards from spreading and also stiffens the bottom right up.

Going to run out of materials soon. Selection where I live is minimal and is about 4 hr drive to larger center. Will probably be out of town towards the end of the month.

Looks great & those drawers are massive. Is there any danger that they will struggle when fully extended, particularly if you have heavy items stored ?

Great job, looking forward to seeing them finished, i am in the process of a similar Norm styled design ATM. You won't know yourself once everything's organised. Great idea with the power points as well.

    Cheers

Ya the drawers are huge. The slides are rated for 100 lbs. It all feels surprisingly sturdy. 100 lbs seems about right for how rigid it feels. With the big drawers it obviously could end up extremely heavy so I will keep an eye on it. If it gets overboard I can just add a 2nd set of sliders to the drawer.

The project is basically on hold for now until I go out of town and get more materials. I've got the bench up against the wall and have just tossed the sheet on top but not screwed down (I want access from the top for when I wire the plugs). I've already been using the bench a lot and I love it. It will look sooo good once I get all the fronts on.

I am planning to store my small air compressor in the left cabinet and have a shelf above it. There will be a power plug inside the cabinet for the compressor and a hole out the left side for the hose. I'll always have air handy and when I need to do some baseboards or something I can just pull it out.

I cheaped out and used non full extension slides for the top right drawer and have found that this is just no darned good so I think I'm gonna go right ahead and fix that.

There will be another shallow drawer top middle and I think all of my little bins of deck screws etc will be happy in there.

And thanks for all the nice comments everyone.

I finally got back onto this project for a few hours today (I think it just needed to age like a fine whiskey)
I hope to get this wrapped up soon. The darker patch on the right hand drawer with no front is a test spot for the varathane I am l planning to use.
