Default Suitable timber for Paul Sellers style workbench

I've been thinking to make a workbench similar to what Paul Sellers makes in his blog series. As far as I can tell he uses 2x3" lengths for laminating together. What would the the equivalent of this readily available in Australia? or what would a suitable timber be?

    TIA

    Jason

If I was going to build a Sellers esque bench I'd probably make it out of 90x45 (or 35) pine from the big green shed. I'd buy 4.8m or 6m lengths as that stuff comes from europe and is nicer than the shorter 2.4/2.7m lenghts.

By the time you dress the 90x45 you're probably closer to 85 or so and according to his blog post you want to be 75mm, so you could just rip them down a bit more or have a thicker top.

    anyways, that's what I'd do

He's using spruce, so I'd expect that the closest easily available match here would be radiata pine. I'd guess he is even using construction grade timber from the stamps on it!.

thanks for the suggestions MrPete. I take it by "big green shed" you are referring to that hardware retailer that has large green stores?

and thanks for the link about the clamps too!

...or seeing Woolworth's annual report with Masters earnings, that'd be more like the 'big broke shed'...
