Hi Alastair,
Really nice workbench you've made, it not only looks solid and useable, but beautiful as well!
I've always wondered about this style of bench racking as it has no diagonal bracing, which I think is what Skew was referring to, but I guess the stretchers are of such size as to prevent it.
Maybe I missed it in the WIP, but what is the story with the jaw of the end vice...looks a bit short on the bottom?
Further to Wongos excellent suggestion of leather as a covering, I use industrial felt which may be a cheaper option. Not the thick grey stuff from removalists, but fine, even gauge stuff, white coloured and available in various thicknesses. I put it flat under more delicate or finished work, as well as poke it into the vice to grip the work.
Anyway, well done, hope you get many years of satisfaction from your new bench.
CheersAndy Mac

Got it!
Missed that one. Racking of the frame I did take into account. The stretchers have heavy, thick shouldered tenons, and are not glued in. Instead there are 2 x 3/8" bolts in each joint. I expected that I might get some loosening up with abuse, but then will torque up the 8 bolts to pull it up snug again.
The theory anyway.
Yep, mentioned the jaw. Caused by multiple design changes, and interconversion between Imp and metric. In fact, with the top cap on the vice jaw, the front member is actually well below the matching level of the apron, so false jaw actually is in right place. If it annoys me enough, I will make a trianguler wedge to fair it in and improve the aesthetics.

Hi Alastair,
Thanks for the 'as built' photos. It came up beautifully I reckon and you made it sound relatively easy. Well done.
Cheers

Alastair, here is the leather. I also use a yago mat for when I am sanding, scraping or planing. No clamps and no bench dogs needed.

Thanks Scott
I'll find out from you where you got the leather.

Is that the bending form for your rocker hanging on the wall?
