See if you can get hold of JJ Holtzapffel Vol IV Practice & Principle of ornamental and complex turning or James Lukin Turning Lathes.
A search on the net for engine turning will also give some interesting sites that will give a few clues.

A quick search of Amazon for that book by Holtzapffel shows that it is available for about $20. I've bought from Amazon, they are reliable and good.
Also, I don't know what state you're in but that book is available in the WA library system and there would be others too so I would do a search on your state library website.

If I may I would recommend:

Techniques of spiral work by Stuart Mortimer http://www.stuartmortimer.com/ The book is very well done, easy to follow and to understand.
I would recommend to start with cheep wood prior to embark with a piece of Pink Ebony
    Have fun!
