Experiments on my rose engine
Cant seem to help myself, on the weekend made some more changes to my Rose Engine so that I can do a bit more.
The first three are a result of this, if you all behave I will show what I have done to the setup.

Mate.....a Rose Engine is on my list when I can get through what is on the "to-do" list.
It looks to be quite a fascinating extension to lathe work
PS Where is Hazeldene?Just do it!
Kind regards Rod

Hi Rod
I have been wanting to make a Rose engine for years, but lack of the right equipment had stopped me.
I have to say this is the most enjoyable Woodworking I have ever done, so relaxing watching those patterns form.
Hazeldene is north of Melbourne about 30k north of Whittlesea in the hills and lots of bushI don't make mistakes just errors of judgment.

As you have said "to watch the patterns reveal themselves as you watch" with the couple of articles you have done I find myself thinking"is that how you make that!".
I made my own wood lathe over 30 years ago and over time have added features to do a lot of operations. Only on the weekend I was patting myself on the back for making a machine that can make things happen and enjoy working with timber and "feeling" what the timber has to offer. Its a great pastime and you end up with an article that you can be proud of.
I looked on Google Maps and found a Hazeldene in Qld. It looked as if there was lots of bush there tooJust do it!
Kind regards Rod

Hello All
This is my latest experiment, the spiral is about 4 inches long and cut in one pass using rocking and the the rosette to form the spirals.
The job automatically changes phase as it rotates and feeds the cutter along the job. for anybody interested I can describe the setup and show photo's of it.
Cheers Tony

I'm always interested in how different effects are produced on a OT lathe. Since each lathe has different features, similar effects are achievable with other approaches. Totally unique effects become possible because the lathe has a feature no others do. All of which I'll consider when I make a machine for myself down the road.

Hi all been at it again today playing and watching and learning and most importantly trying to make sense of it all.
So a couple more photos of results, when I work out the video thing will put a video in.
I won't describe how it all works this time, but over the next couple of days I will describe each of the photos and what is actually happening in this post.
Cheers
Tony

Hi Pete.
A good base for a build yourself Rose Engine is the one I used Custom Rambling Rose Engine & Ornamental lathe - demonstrate, teach, design, construction, plans
This is what mine is based on, the only drawback with the design is implementing pumping, but I just pump the tool and not the job.
I have a 3d model of most of mine plus some draings I did as I converted it to metric and use materials that I can get in Australia.
Any drawings information that I have is here for the asking.

The video of cutting spiral
With any luck this should show the video
The quality is pretty poor and it is noisy so wear ear protection, but you should get the idea.
This is my first attemp at a video

Well spirals have been the flavour of the week as you can see from the selection of photo's presented here.
All again done with the set as outlined in the previous post's. The last 8 were done with a Rosette that is only 50mm dia and a 1.5mm amplitude, I did this because I wanted a nice flowing profile on the spirals.
So designing the rosette to be the same diametre as the work piece the shape is more controllable, and the rosette represents the actual cut as it will be, no obscure shape shifts as happens with larger rosette's
Cheers

made a mess here seem to have attached all these extra pictures and have no idea how to get rid of them ????????

Many thanks for all that great looking set up.
I know you have the rose engine rocking during cutting to stop the cutter jumping as much I wonder if a guide wheel positioned over to far side of the work piece at the uncut end, mounted onto the cutter mounting with slight tension spring would help.

That is a very impressive OT lathe set up.That achieves result in keeping with the quality of the lathe.
