    I have another question and it is which grain is better end grain or cross grain to do the patterns on?

    For fine detail, I reckon end grain would be better, because all of the fibers are better anchored to the parent timber. Note how difficult it is to get a fine cusp on spindle work. Depends on the timber, of course. Some hardwoods have substantial cross-grain strength.
